HUNGER STRIKE IN SAMAIL CENTRAL JAIL CONFIRMED

An official from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has confirmed that about 22 prisoners are on hunger strike in Samail Central Jail since December 15, 2011.
The official told Muscat Daily that an NHRC team visited the central prison last week and met ten prisoners who are on strike. The team was given an option by the Directorate General of Prisons (DGP) to meet all the striking prisoners or a few of them.
“The ten prisoners, who are detained in relation to the protests in Sohar and Ibri, told the team that they are satisfied with the food and treatment by police officers,” the official said.
However, the prisoners complained about the sentences and demanded release. While some conceded their guilt, others said they were not happy with the sentences handed out.
He added that appealing court sentences is not NHRC’s task. “There
are other bodies that prisoners can approach for complaints against court sentences. NHRC was concerned about the violation of prisoners’ rights, but no such violation was reported.”
“The DGP was very cooperative. We sent the letter to them on Sunday and the visit was fixed on Tuesday as the police were occupied with the Royal Horse Racing Festival on Monday.”
The visit was organised to verify the news of a mass hunger strike by the prisoners circulating on a few social networking websites. The official earlier told Muscat Daily that NHRC had not received any other information about the strike.
The official said that NHRC receives complaints related to prisoners from time to time, even from the DGP. “The Directorate General of Prisons also forwards the complaints of prisoners to NHRC sometimes.”
The NHRC chairman will approve the team’s report of the visit and send copies to the media for publishing. “The commission works transparently following complaints of any human rights violation it receives,” the official added.
